Harvard and Bell in Hand Tavern

Our friend Anthony from KSU is also working at a firm here in Boston for his internship, so we spent the weekend hanging out with him. He lives two blocks from Harvard University, so on Saturday we took the T to Harvard Square, ate a delicious lunch, and wandered around Harvard for a while. My preconceptions of Harvard were primarily based on the movies (think Legally Blonde), so it's no surprise that it wasn't quite what I expected. I envisioned it as somewhat uniform... all gorgious and impressive, but all designed in the same style and material. Instead, Harvard is very eclectic. Traditional colonial, gothic, classical, modern, brick, stone, granite, cement, glass.... it's all there. The boys wanted to see the Harvard Graduate School of Design building (Harvard is the top architecture school in the country). This picture is from the internet (we weren't actually supposed to be in the building, but we sneaked in!) I couldn't find any of the interior, but that whole sloping, glass part of the building is their studio space. Built like a giant staircase, each step a maze of cubicles, desks, and models; it feels impressively large and yet, cluttered at the same time. After exploring Harvard for a while, we decided to walk downtown. We ended up near Fanuiel Hall, at the Bell in Hand Tavern, America's oldest continuously operating tavern (open since 1795). The original owner was Jimmy Wilson, Boston's retired city crier, thus the bell in hand!
After a drink, we parted ways for the night, with plans to meet up at church the next morning. We visited Christ the King Presbyterian Church, which just happens to be the same church my youth group worked at during a mission's trip eight years ago! I had no idea until we were walking up to it, and I realized that I had spray-painted that fence! They had a meal after service in their fellowship hall, and all I could think about was Mama Cool making us meals in that very same kitchen.

With the wedding and moving and all, I got behind reading your blog... so I caught up today, yay for Boston! That looks so fun, all the historic places! Ian and I want to rewatch National Treasure then hit up all the places here (sidenote, the market I work at was part of the chase scene in that movie!!) ... I can't wait to go visit you guys, and for you to come down here, yay!

I'm looking through your Boston pics and lovingly reminiscing about last week. I, too, snuck into a Harvard building -- the freshman dining hall, to be precisce. My cousin who attends Harvard is a tour guide, so he snuck us in so I could see the Harry Potter-esque architecture and decor. :)
