Tamale Festival

Did you know that making tamales is a holiday tradition in many Hispanic cultures?  I didn't... well, until yesterday, that is!  One of our favorite spots here, Pearl Brewery (where we go to the farmer's market and sometimes run along the river walk), hosted the first annual Tamale Festival yesterday.  Because of the KSU basketball game in the afternoon, we only made it down for the last hour or so, but it was a blast!  We met our friends Daniel and Sylvia, whose son, Nathan, is only a few months older than Elli.  There was live music, dancing, fireworks, and of course lots of tamales!  Because we were so late, we didn't make it over to the tamales, but Elli was enamored with the band.  I took this video with my cell phone, and it is terrible, but you can kind of see her in the pink shirt and hat, holding hands with the lead singer and feeling quite comfortable on stage. (btw - they were totally okay with kids on the stage... I would not have let her just run up there!)

WARNING - at least on our computer, the sound is very loud, so make sure your speakers aren't turned up all the way!

Elli did not want to leave the music, but she wasn't really into dancing either.  At home she is our little dancing queen, but she just wanted to stand there and stare at the other kids.

Here are Elli and Nathan dancing with some glow sticks.  They originally belonged to a nice gentleman sitting nearby, but when Elli spotted them, he very kindly let them have them.  The picture on the right is small and blurry, but I had to add it in, because Elli was so excited that Mommy had "boops" (boots) and Elli had boops.  She's still talking about it today.

The lighting made for a photographic challenge, but Daniel did a great job at capturing the atmosphere.
