Many of my childhood memories involve camping, hiking or fishing either on vacation, at the farm or tagging along on boyscout trips. Daniel and I both grew up enjoying these types of activities, so when we registered for our wedding, we included a tent and basic camping gear. Well seven years of marriage and two kids later, we've only "camped" once... in the backyard... and Caroline and I slept inside. This must be changed! We were reminded of the joy of exploring the great outdoors a few weeks ago when my parents came to visit. Although there wasn't time to plan an overnight, we took a day trip to Pedernales Falls State Park.
The hiking was hot and steep in places for the girls, but they were troopers (with the help of a few pep-talks and piggy-back rides).

Elli got to explore her very first cave with Grandpa (or "Paga" as Caroline calls him). I love this progression of excitement, concern and victory.
There was a stream perfect for wading and playing, especially for kids about five years older than ours. We will definitely be coming back, but the girls warmed up to wading and splashing.
Elli braved riding the rapids with Daddy!
Just in one totally doable day, we made memories to treasure. We are inspired and committed to making this a part of our family life.
Next time we need to bring more hats, though.
